Pep Guardiola rejected the proposal to become technical director of the Italian national team, an offer promoted by the sports director of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Paolo Maldini, as published this Friday by the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Thank you, I feel honored, but right now I don’t feel capable,” the Catalan coach expressed on Thursday night to the leaders of the federation, according to the newspaper, information that was later reproduced by the main Italian media.

The Spanish coach analyzed for several days the proposal presented by Maldini and Leonardo, but finally decided to maintain his plan to temporarily move away from the bench, after ending his ten-year spell at the helm of Manchester City.

The Italian newspaper indicated that the reasons for his refusal include the desire to dedicate more time to his personal life and family, as well as his doubts about the job of a national coach, a role that he considers difficult to perform without daily contact with the footballers.

The former technician Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City did not negotiate the economic conditions of the proposal and personally communicated their decision to Maldini.

The former Milan footballer and former captain of the Italian national team stated on Thursday that Guardiola is on the list as “one of the objectives” and revealed that the federation has also maintained contacts with the Italian Carlo Ancelotti, current technical director of Brazil. Italy is looking for a new technical director since the resignation of Gennaro Gattuso last April after failing to qualify for the World Cup.

After the refusal of the Spanish coach, Andrea Pirlo emerges as the main candidate to assume the technical direction of the Italian team within the long-term project designed by the FIGC. A possible return of Roberto Mancini is also contemplated.
