Workers in the public and private sectors enjoy several days of rest during the year, known as holidays, depending on the location. After seven months, there are still several official breaks in 2026.
Both national holidays and the holiday granted to Guatemala City in honor of the Virgin of the Assumption represent an opportunity to travel or take a break from routine.
From August to December, four holidays, one holiday and two half days off are planned, in accordance with the provisions of article 127 of the Labor Code. Most of these dates are not transferable.
The next break will be the holiday of August 15, dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption, which the workers of Guatemala City enjoy. According to the Law that Promotes Internal Tourism, the Easter holidays, Independence Day and the festivities of each locality are excluded from the transfer of holidays.
This means that the August 15 holiday, which this year falls on a Saturday, will remain on that date. However, those who must work will have the right to receive the corresponding extraordinary payment for the time worked.
Regarding the rest schedule, these are the dates that workers will be able to enjoy in the coming months, including the opportunity to rest for a long weekend with the arrival of Christmas:
- Saturday, August 15: Virgin of the Assumption (Guatemala City)
- Tuesday, September 15: Independence Day
- Tuesday, October 20: Revolution Day
- Sunday, November 1: All Saints’ Day
- Thursday, December 24 (noon onwards): Christmas Eve
- Friday, December 25: Christmas
- Thursday, December 31 (noon onwards): New Year’s Eve
The close of the year and the beginning of 2027 will represent an opportunity to enjoy a prolonged rest, since January 1, 2027 will fall on a Friday.
