Monsignor Gonzalo de Villa, archbishop of Santiago de Guatemala, this Friday, May 9 shared a message for the recent choice of Pope Leo XIV.

“I want to congratulate in the name of all our archdiocese to Pope Leo XIV,” he said.

He added that it is a great occasion to thank God and recalled the death of Pope Francis and his long and fruitful ministry in favor of the Church.

He indicated that Robert Prevost is born in the United States and with many years of missionary in Peru.

“A figure that perhaps was surprise, among the candidates was not the one that sounded the most, but what we have to give is thanks to God because we have Pope who has been chosen in the conclave by the cardinal lords,” said the archbishop.

He indicated that on Sunday, May 18 will be the date of the inauguration of the Petrino Ministry of the New Pontiff.

He announced that this Sunday, May 11 at 12 noon at the Metropolitan Cathedral will celebrate a Thanksgiving Mass for the New Pope.

“We are glad as a church for having a new Pope and we are glad because he is someone who speaks very well Spanish and who can give us messages in our language and first God will get to come to Guatemala,” he said.

The Mass of the beginning of the Pontificate of Leo XIV will be on Sunday, May 18 and three days later, on the 21st, the new Pope will have his first audience with the faithful, the prefecture of the Pontifical House reported Friday.

This mass, in which the fisherman and the canopy receives, symbols of pontifical power, will take place at 10 hours local (8.00 GMT) in the Plaza de San Pedro del Vaticano and it is expected that delegations and heads of state of the world are expected to arrive.
