The administration of the Tikal National Park communicated this Friday, May 9 that access to temple II will be restricted indefinitely for visitors arriving at the archaeological site.

The authorities did not specify how long that area will remain closed, and called on tourists to visit other sectors of the park.

“The Administration of the Tikal National Park informs the general population that next Monday, May 12, repair and maintenance works will be carried out in the initial stretch of the temple II staircase. These tasks are aimed at guaranteeing the safety of all our visitors,” says a statement.

He adds that, during the process, access to that area will remain temporarily restricted until the work is completed, so tourists can travel the rest of the spaces in the archaeological zone.

“The Administration of the Tikal National Park reiterates its commitment to the safety and well -being of visitors, and works continuously to offer a safe and enriching experience,” adds the document.

On April 22, several publications in social networks questioned the state of the crest of the temple III, in the Tikal National Park, due to the alleged deterioration that affects it, despite the fact that it is one of the most emblematic structures of the Petén archaeological site.

However, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Administration of the Tikal National Park assured that the damages indicated on social networks are due to controlled conservation processes and not to the carelessness of the authorities, as indicated.

“The shared images show a perforation carried out in the third level of the crest with the purpose of allowing access to the interior of the empty chamber and facilitating the structural stabilization work,” says a statement from the Ministry of Culture.

In addition, he points out that the cracks detected in the vault were caused by the impact of a ray that affected the crest of the temple III in 2012.
