An older adult of Chiquimula is the first human case of the boreride worm confirmed in Guatemala, according to the Ministry of Health.
The health portfolio reported this Friday, May 9 that the affected person already receives medical attention and is under monitoring.
The authorities indicated that these types of cases can be prevented by adequate wound care, personal hygiene and surveillance in areas with animals.
Health clarified that this case does not constitute an epidemic or an outbreak, but that it is a specific and isolated situation.
The portfolio indicated: “Human infestation by barely worm is rare, even in contexts where the parasite has been detected in animals. It is important to clarify that this type of parasitic infection in humans is usually related to specific factors such as unrelated wounds, conditions of little hygiene or prolonged exposure in rural or peri -urban environments.”
