The National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP), reported this February 22 about the discovery of cracks in one of the structures located in the Yaxha Nakum Naranjo National Park.
According to the statement that CONAP shared on its social networks, the park administration carried out a technical diagnosis and structural risks were identified on the southern and west facades of the temple.
“The structural risks are attributed to the excess load that the structure supports, especially during the period of observation of the sunsets. This situation represents a risk for both visitors and for the conservation of cultural heritage,” the statement said.
Given these findings, the authorities reported that, as of this Saturday, access to the east acropolis and the temple of the red hands of the Yaxha archaeological site is restricted.
“We request the understanding and collaboration of tourism and visiting services providers,” says the letter.
