The elections to designate the successor of Luis Almagro as general secretary of the OAS will be held on March 10.

The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, met this Saturday, March 1 with the president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, in Montevideo, Uruguay, and spoke about the importance of strengthening regional integration between South America and Central America.
Both rulers attend the investiture ceremony of the elected president of Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi.
Peña also met with Luis Almagro, general secretary of the Organization of American States (OAS), to carry out “a balance” on his management in the agency that It started in 2015 and will end on May 25.
Almagro’s successor could be Paraguayan Foreign Minister, Rubén Ramírez, who competes for the position with Albert Ramchand Ramdin, from Surinam. Among these two candidates, the OAS member states, including Guatemala, must choose the new secretary general.
Who will Guatemala support?
Regarding the election of Almagro’s successor, Guatemala does not yet decide who to support the two candidates.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINEX) reported that “meetings have been held with candidates to listen to their work plans and the authorities are conducting an analysis to make a decision in the next few days.”
The elections to designate the new OAS Secretary will be on March 10 in Washington, United States, Meeting attended by Guatemalan Chancellor Carlos Ramiro Martínez.
To occupy the place of Almagro, the winner must obtain at least 18 votes from the 34 member countries. The new general secretary of the OAS will be elected for a period of five years.
