Within the framework of Women’s Day, which is commemorated on March 8, the Guatevisión program, direct impact, pays tribute to two workers in the Central Market: Carmen Salguero, of the emblematic spare parts Doña Mela, and Gladys Morán.
Carmen Salguero, owner of Mrs. Mela’s spare parts, business that carries her mother’s nickname, Imelda Boror Plata, and which began in 1950, told Direct impact that rises every morning at 3.30 or 4 hours to prepare the dishes that taste both national and foreign.
Salguero, also known as Doña Mela, sent a message to Guatemalan women: “Fight, do not give up so easily; there are good and bad days, but you have to persevere.”
Gladys Morán, a young woman from Chicamán, Quiché, works in a tortillería in the Central Market already produces between 500 and 800 tortillas.
Morán tells that the work is tired, but his mother is his inspiration to move forward, because part of the salary he receives is sent to Chicamán so he can buy basic products.
Salguero and Morán are examples of Guatemalan women who work daily and seek to help their families.
