At least two people were arrested this Wednesday, March 19 in the 18th Street in Zone 1, where agents of the National Civil Police (PNC) intervened to disperse a demonstration against the mandatory vehicle insurance implemented by the Government, as confirmed reporters in the place.

So far, it is known that the detainees are two men. One of them claimed not to be linked to the protests and assured that he returned from a gym, but was consigned by PNC agents.

The arrests occurred within the framework of a series of protests that keep the passage blocked in at least 34 points of the country, mainly in the capital.

The PNC was consulted about the detainees, but they still do not respond.

Eviction in the Historic Center

Guatemala security forces cleared one of the blockages in the historic center of the capital, during the second day of demonstrations in rejection of the mandatory vehicle insurance decreed this week by the Government.

PNC Special Forces agents launched tear gas to disperse a group of approximately 200 protesters who had bet on one of the main access avenues to the Historic Center.

Citizens occupied this space from Tuesday night in support of more than 30 blockages nationwide, with which they reject the measure promoted by President Bernardo Arévalo de León to demand mandatory vehicular insurance for third parties.

The security forces began the clearance of the roads taken after the Minister of the Interior, Francisco Jiménez, declared that the mandatory insurance would not be revoked despite the demonstrations.
