Authorities of the Public Ministry (MP) offered a press conference this Friday, March 21, in which they detailed which are the most reported crimes in Guatemala.

Ángel Pineda, general secretary of the MP, indicated that they have a list with the 10 most reported crimes. The first is that of Threatsfollowed by violence against women.

Of the total complaints, threats represent 15.3 % and violence against women, 15 %, Pineda explained.

He mentioned the integrated centers of attention to these crimes, since 50 % of the allegations of threats are recorded in the interior of the country.

In that sense, tax agencies have been enabled in different municipalities to serve the population victim of threats.

On another issue, Emma Flores, prosecutor for the Prosecutor’s Office against the crime of extortion, presented the results obtained during extortion operations.

“The penitentiary system has historically been a challenge because there are no adequate controls and there is indeed no signal blockade is these prison centers,” he said in relation to the issue of extortion from prisons.

Flores added that, through proceedings, they have evidenced the problem and that the investigations reveal that Many of extortion calls come from prison centers.

He pointed out that another challenge is the use of the Internet from prisons, There are victims who suffer from extortion through applications.
