The president of the United States, Donald Trump, signed on Tuesday an executive order that forces us to present documents that prove citizens to be able to register as a voter in federal elections.
The Electoral Assistance Commission will require in its registration form by mail a documentary evidence confirming US citizenship.
Among the valid documents for registration are the United States passport, an official identification (ID) or a military identification card.
In the order, Trump points out that the states do not “properly” verify “the citizens of the voters, and underlines the importance of” free, fair and honest elections, exempt from fraud, errors or suspicions. “
The president has reiterated on numerous occasions that fraud occurred in the presidential elections of 2020, in which he lost to Joe Biden, and has assured that non -citizen people voted illegally, although there are no evidence that supports said statement.
“The right of US citizens to which their votes are counted correctly is vital to determine the legitimate winner of elections,” says the document.
The illegal immigration reform and responsibility law of immigrants expressly prohibits since 1996 that people born abroad without US citizenship vote in federal elections, under threat of fines, prison, inadmissibility and deportation.
The American Union for Civil Liberties (ACLU, in English) condemned the Executive Order, which he described as an attempt to deprive the right to vote to millions of citizens enabled to vote.
Sophia Lin Lakin, director of the ACLU vote right project, warned that this measure will affect “disproportionately” historically excluded communities, such as color voters, naturalized citizens, people with disabilities and older adults.
Likewise, the order urges states to use voting systems that do not register votes through bar codes, and prohibits counting votes by mail received after the day of the election. According to the document, the Department of National Security and the Department of Government Efficiency – this last led by businessman Elon Musk – will review the electoral roll of each State.
