Santo Christ Yacente: a legacy of faith and art that transcends centuries
The image of the Yacente Christ Christ, venerated in the rectory parish of El Calvario, has its roots in the former Santiago de Guatemala. Carved in 1643 by the sculptor Pedro de Mendoza, he was blessed by Bishop Bartolomé González single and first procession in 1670 in the neighborhood of El Tortuguero.
After the earthquakes of 1717 and 1773, the image was transferred several times until it reached its current location in 1933. During the twentieth century, the procession evolved from being sober and humble to one of the most solemn and sumptuous of the city, thanks to the work of the parish priest José Girón Perrone and antigraine devotees such as Guillermo Lira Mollinedo and Marcelo Gaytán.
The Holy Christ was subjected to several restorations, the most recent in 2015, by the Movable Property Restoration Center (Cerebiem), after a controversial removal in 2014 that even generated a judicial process. In 2015, with the arrival of Father Manuel de Jesús Chilín, the temple was revitalized and the cult of these historical images was strengthened.
