The investigations of the Prosecutor’s Office of Crimes against Life and Integrity of the Persons of the Public Ministry (MP) reported on the role of two agents of the National Civil Police (PNC) in the band of taxi drivers “pirates of death, indicated to drug their victims to assault them, but product of that caused at least 23 deaths.
According to the prosecution, death pirates used keywords to refer to those who were going to assault, kidnap or kill.
“When the authors of the criminal acts led the victims inside the taxis, they referred to them such as Tizón, Julio, Bulture or Animal,” said Edwin Marroquín, prosecutor of crimes against life.
He added that, once the way of operating the structure was determined, they initiated the surveillance of the suspects and thus managed to prevent more criminal acts.
“We began to perform night operations next to the PNC. When we placed the suspects, they made a call and, minutes later, a police officer arrived,” said Marroquin.
It was Gilda Maritriny Medrano Barillas, PNC agent with identification number 57717-P.
“The woman was a family of one of the members of the criminal group. When she recognized the subjects who were driving in the taxis, she reached the place and tried to prevent them from being identified,” said the prosecutor.
Medrano Barillas tried to prevent his brothers, Jairo Barillas, aka Pirateand Cristian Mauricio Barillas, were identified by other PNC agents.
Police and their two brothers were arrested March 2 along with 9 other people most involved in the “death pirates” case.
According to the police institution, Gilda Maritriny Medrano Barillas was also a vocalist of the PNC musical band.
Marroquín commented that there is an arrest warrant against another police officer, indicated to collaborate with pirate taxi drivers.
He added that this agent possibly had links with employees and bars owners, who were in charge of making fraudulent transactions with the credit and debit cards of the victims.
He also indicated that the policeman, now a fugitive from justice, allegedly performed surveillance and assembled operations when people left the bars.
He added that if the agents detected that the drivers were drunk, he demanded money in exchange for not capturing them.
