Relivating the triumphal entry of Jesus of Nazareth in Jerusalem, Ramos Sunday’s processions mark the solemn start of Holy Week, time in which the faithful commemorate the passion, death and resurrection of Christ.
This Sunday, April 13, devotees and parishioners will congregate in the capital city to receive, with Palmas and Ramos, the image of the humble king who, mounted in a donkey, was recognized as the Messiah by those who were waiting for him with faith and hope.
As part of the celebration, believers meet in the country’s temples, where the gospel that tells Jesus into Jerusalem is proclaimed. In zone 1, commemoration includes two processional steps that recall this moment in Christ’s life. Subsequently, the faithful congregate in the parish to participate in the Holy Mass and receive the blessing of the branches.
Faithful of different ages make carpet of sawdust, palm and fruits to decorate the passage of courtship. Accompanied by funeral marches and incense, they carry on shoulders the image that represents the arrival of Jesus, on the eve of Easter.
These are the two processional courtships scheduled for this Sunday, April 13 in the Historic Center.
Jesús de las Palmas procession
The procession of Jesus of Las Palmas, of the Rectory San Miguel de Capuchinas, announces every Sunday of Ramos the triumphal entry of Christ in Jerusalem. This tradition, unique in its kind to be carried out according to the Liturgy of the Church, travels through the streets of the Historic Center since 1948, when the current image replaced another in 1892.
The size was elaborated by the sculptor Raymundo Vielman, commissioned by Manuel Barillas Castilla, both inspired by the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
After the 1976 earthquake, the temple was severely damaged, and the procession was suspended for four years. On March 30, 1980, the image came out again in procession, in an act that included a welcome mass and the premiere of a new 40 -arms walk, decorated by Ramiro Araujo Arroyo.
On November 23, 2008, the solemn act of consecration of the image was held, carried out by Monsignor Rodolfo Quezada Toruño in the Metropolitan Cathedral. Since then, the march “The number 5”, dedicated to President Jorge Ubico, is considered as his official anthem.

Jesús Nazareno de los Milagros procession
With roots that date back to 1736, the procession of Jesús Nazareno de los Milagros, organized by the Association of the CI of Jesús Nazareno de los Milagros, is currently celebrated on Palm Sunday and is one of the most emblematic in the country.
With a route of more than 18 hours through the streets of the Historic Center, this manifestation of faith brings together more than 25 thousand cucuruchos and devotees charger, which accompany the consecrated images of Jesus of Miracles and the Blessed Virgin of Dolores.
The Anda del Nazareno has 124 arms; that of the Virgin, 72. 130 shifts are made to the rhythm of solemn marches such as Painful materby María Julia Quinónez Ydígoras, and The crying of the Virginby José Brígido Porres Alecia.
This year, the Brotherhood, Feligresses and the Archdiocesan Sanctuary of Mr. San José celebrate the 32 years of consecration of the venerated image of Jesús Nazareno de los Milagros.
