Trelec celebrates the operation of two fundamental projects within the National Transport Expansion Plan (PETNAC), which will directly benefit thousands of Guatemalan families.

The activation of the Cabañas 69/34.5 kV substation and the Rio Grande transmission line – Jalapa 69 KV, two strategic initiatives that reinforce the electrical transmission network in the country, ensuring continuous and quality access to the energy service in the key regions of Guatemala.
Both projects, which are part of the Lot D of the Petnac awarded to Trelec by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) in 2015, represent significant advances in the modernization of the country’s energy transmission system. This plan covers the construction and expansion of 12 substations and 160 km of transmission lines, with a current advance of 84.64%.

The projects
Located in the municipality of El Jícaro, department of El Progreso, the Cabañas substation represents an investment close to 35 million quetzales and will benefit more than 10,000 families in the region. This substation, put into operation in April 2024, significantly improves the distribution of energy and optimizes the electricity supply, which will contribute to the social and economic development of the area.
For its part, the Rio Grande transmission line – Jalapa connects two strategic substations, Rio Grande and Jalapa, increasing the capacity of the transmission network. This work, with a length of 66 km, becomes the most extensive of those made by Trelec to date. With an investment of 145 million quetzales, this transmission line benefits more than 20 thousand homes in the departments of Jalapa and Chiquimula, improving the quality of the energy received by the communities. The line was energized in December 2024 after completing all the necessary procedures.
These projects are just some of Trelec’s many efforts to guarantee a more reliable and efficient electricity supply in the country. In addition to the Cabañas substation and the Rio Grande line – Jalapa, Trelec has completed the modernization and expansion of the substations The Site 69/13.8 KV and the Castilian 69/13.8 KV, improving the maneuverability and reliability of the system. The extensions of these substations were put into operation in April and October 2024, respectively.
