The Public Ministry (MP) reported that this Wednesday, April 30, the Prosecutor’s Office against the Crime of Extortion, through its agencies in Chimaltenango, Retalhuleu, Coatepeque, Sacatepéquez, Escuintla and Central Headquarters, executes the operation “Gray Swans”.
In the action, 136 search, inspection, registration and kidnapping of evidence in real estate located in Guatemala, Quetzaltenango, Retalhuleu, Sacatepéquez, Escuintla, Chimaltenango and Santa Rosa are developed.
According to the MP, the Prosecutor’s Office detected the existence of the criminal group “Gray Swans”, derived from the actions of organizations dedicated to extortion committed through encrypted applications for safe communications.
In addition, these organizations are dedicated to illegal arms trafficking, rival and business owners, with the purpose of imposing their control through physical threats, backed by selective murders of victims who resist and rivals that compete in criminal activities.
He added that the criminal facts are coordinated through mobile messaging applications.
Preliminary results
The MP reported that, as a preliminary result of the proceedings, the capture of 57 people is reported.
Of the detainees, nine are members of the Mara Salvatrucha and 27 of the gang of neighborhood 18.
In addition, the location of Q44 thousand in one of the raided properties is reported.
