This is the new electric power rates from May 1, 2025

The social and non -social rates for the quarter from May 1 to July 31, 2025 were stable, compared to those in force until April 30.

According to the figures of the National Electric Power Commission (CNEE) included in Resolution 155-2025 published on April 29 in Central America, the rates that Guatemala electricity company, SA (EEGSA), and Energuate distributors can charge the end user are in the following way:

Non -social rate

The non -social rate is what is applied to consumption users of 300 kilowatts hour a month onwards.

For EEGSA users, Q0.03 (representing 2%) and remains in Q1.51. by kWh per month.

Meanwhile, for the consumers of the Electricity Distributor of the West (DEOCSA) and for those of the Electricity Distributor of the East (Deorsa), they were fixed in Q2.21 and Q2.11 respectively, leaving without change with respect to those applied in April.

The non -social rate is composed of about 250 thousand users.

Social rate

In the social rate segment, composed of users who consume 0 to 300 kWh per month, remain in Q1.42 for EEGSA, which also represents increased Q0.03 (2.1%).

Meanwhile, for Deocsa and Deorsa they also had no changes in this group and remained in Q2.09 and Q2.02 per kwh per month respectively,

It should be remembered that a subsidy is applied to the Social Electrification Institute (IND), for users who consume 1 to 100 kilowatts hour per month.

Around 3.8 families are part of the social fee segment because they do not exceed the volume of consumption, and these, 2.2 million families lend consume of 1 AA 100 megawatts and are covered by the Inde subsidy.

It should be taken into account that apart from the charges or discounts on mention, other positions such as the position of distribution services, the VAT of 12% and the public lighting rate that varies according to the municipality are added on the monthly bill.

Luis Ortiz, president of the CNEE indicated that prices remained stable and described them as normal and that they are calculated in a technical way. The difference in the adjustments is derived in that not all distributors have the same energy sources and that is why they vary.

He mentioned that, although the winter of 2024 was better than that of 2023 when long periods of drought were recorded, it did not behave as expected, in addition to the rain concentrated in certain areas so they do not finish recharging the basins well and when the winter ends the emptying process of the basins is more accelerated.

Generation according to resources

The CNEE exposed in its quarterly adjustment bulletin about seasonality in electricity generation:

To calculate the trimester rates from May to July, the costs of the months of Energo, February and March were taken into account.

  • The entity said that hydroelectric production between January to March 2025 shows an online behavior with the completion of the rainy season, showing a 38% reduction compared to the previous quarter (October to December 2024).
  • Due to the current rhythm of energy demand growth in the country, the electrical system resorts more frequently to alternative generation sources, such as the thermal, based on fossil fuels and other intermittent energy sources such as photovoltaic and wind, with the aim of meeting said demand, adds the entity.
  • These energy sources, like the hydroelectric generation, have a marked alternation of fuel costs, in the case of non -renewable, and for seasonality in the case of generation by renewable sources.

The CNEE also explains about the stability of the rates and what the diversification of the energy matrix means:

The rates are maintained in the stability line reached from the second semester of 2022, with minor fluctuations, generated by the normal and periodic oscillation of the prices of purchase of energy and power for the supply of demand, according to factors such as fluctuations in international prices of fuel The dynamics of the new supply contracts that enter into force to guarantee the supply to users.

The diversification of the electricity generation matrix in Guatemala allows to greatly be able to keep the prices of electricity for regulated users. In this context, the importance of continuing to progress in the diversification of the energy matrix according to the 2019-2050 energy policy established by the Ministry of Energy and Mines is highlighted.

Cost projections for the seasonal year included from May 2025 to April 2026 were updated. Based on this analysis, the corresponding adjustments were made in the rates of the final electric power distribution service that said users will pay during the quarter between May 1 to July 31, 2025.
