Studies document the most prominent contributions and include projects in environmental sustainability, social inclusion, technological innovation, rural development, renewable energy, employment generation, among others. Each study presents a detailed structure with specific objectives, faced challenges, results obtained, lessons learned and its link with multiple SDGs.

The event was opened by Alfredo Vila, president of Unala and Asazgua; He had interventions by Mr. Minoru Takada, Chief of the Energy Team of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs; and presentation of the studies was in charge of Luis Miguel Paiz, executive president of UNALA and general manager of Asazgua. As part of the agenta, the copies were delivered to the United Nations.

“This is not just a report, it is something historical. For the first time we collect the collective efforts of a complete sector of a region, showing as the agribusiness of Latin America sugar actively contributes to the sustainable development objectives. This represents a regional documentation that reflects not only individual initiatives but also a shared commitment to sustainability,” said Alfredo Vila.

Representatives of the United Nations System, diplomats and business leaders of the Latin American region participated in the activity.

The agroindustry of the sugarcane of Guatemala, through Asazgua, was the first private union organization worldwide in developing case studies to demonstrate, in a systematic and technical way, the specific contribution of the sector to the fulfillment of the SDGs. This has allowed to demonstrate efforts and commitment to sustainable development.

The 17 case studies are available in English on the UNALA website: Unala.org/es/publicaciones/
