An intense rain accompanied by gusts of wind surprised the inhabitants of the metropolitan area on the afternoon of this Thursday, October 9, causing the fall of trees, damage to homes, power outages and multiple road complications in different areas of Guatemala City and surrounding municipalities.
The Municipal Traffic Police (PMT) reported fallen trees on public roads in sectors such as Periférico, Las Américas Avenue and 49th Street in zone 12, where a branch blocked the path to El Trébol. Municipal personnel were mobilized to the affected points to remove debris and enable passage.
Amílcar Montejo, head of Communication at Emetra, reported that a tree blocked 13th street of the Periférico, zone 11. In addition, removal maneuvers were carried out on the Cejusa bridge, where a tree obstructed traffic towards Majadas. Neighbors and motorists collaborated with the authorities.
The Municipal Firefighters also responded to emergencies due to downed trees on 9th Avenue and 11th Street in Zone 11. The falling branches affected mobility and caused fear among residents, although no injuries were reported.
In the area of the Roosevelt Hospital, damage was observed due to strong winds, and medical personnel pointed out the fall of trees within the facility. In nearby neighborhoods, such as Roosevelt, zone 11, damage was also recorded.
Montejo added that a whirlwind in the south-west of the city caused roofs of homes to collapse and electrical transformers to explode, which left several sectors without electrical service.
For its part, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) confirmed the fall of hail in different parts of the country. The institution recommended caution and asked the population to report similar events in their communities.
In Villa Nueva, the local PMT warned of poor visibility for driving, especially in zone 1 of that municipality. The authorities maintain monitoring for possible new emergencies.
According to the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh), rainy conditions could continue during the afternoon and evening, due to the atmospheric instability present in the central region of the country.
