The viaduct of the Roosevelt Causeway and 9th Avenuein the zone 11 of the Guatemala Cityenters its decisive phase after more than three years of work marked by pauses, redesigns and technical complications. The authorization of the work remains scheduled for December 2025although several fronts are still active in the place.
Currently, the project reports a 68% physical progress and 60% financialwhich implies intense days in the remainder of the year to recover the time lost due to the constant delays that affected its original schedule.
With an estimated length of 402 metersthe viaduct will pass over the Roosevelt roadways and Saint Johnand will link zone 11 with zone 7 of the capital, routes that, over time, have concentrated high travel times during rush hour.
It is expected that this new work will directly impact the mobility of the inhabitants of the zones 3, 7 and 11and it is expected to evaluate its strategic contribution to connectivity between the city and surrounding municipalities such as Mixco.
What is being worked on and what remains to be finished
During the first days of October, crews have focused on the bridge girder installation 4in addition to the assembly of diaphragms and the formation of entrance ramps. However, there are still essential stages to complete before enabling the viaduct.
Among the pending works include the placement of beams on two bridges, the completion of ramps that will connect the distributor with the surrounding roads, including the paving of the accesses.

Also it is necessary to complete the casting of the slabs that form the main platformas well as completing the placement of beams on the two main bridges, essential to support the lanes and guarantee structural stability.
Finally, complementary works must be carried out: installation of drainage, lighting, horizontal and vertical signage, curb and railing finishes, and final cleaning of the road before its inauguration.
These tasks will define whether the delivery date, scheduled for the December 22, 2025can be met without additional adjustments.

Delays and interruptions from 2022
Since its inception, in 2022, the project has faced multiple setbacks that extended its deadlines. In November 2023, engineers found pipes and an underground collector not recorded in the plans, which forced the structural design to be modified.
In June 2024, the work was suspended again due to lack of bond from the supervisory company, a key requirement to guarantee the supervision of the work.
The definitive reactivation occurred in April 2025, after a resolution of protection from the Constitutional Court, which allowed work to be resumed after months of uncertainty.
Today, the Roosevelt Viaduct is emerging as one of the most anticipated works to alleviate traffic in the capital, although its completion still depends on overcoming the last technical obstacles before the end of the year.
