Prosecutors had sought 11 years behind bars for Combs, 55, but District Judge Arun Subramanian handed down a 50-month sentence and a $500,000 fine earlier this month.
Diddy’s defense has appealed both the conviction and the sentence, which could affect the date indicated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
The date reflects the time the hip hop star has already served in a Brooklyn jail.
Combs was acquitted by a jury in July the most serious charges against him – sex trafficking and organized crime – but he was convicted of two counts of transporting people between states for the purposes of prostitution.
Subramanian said he was required by law to hand down a sentence that reflected the seriousness of Combs’ “serious crimes,” which he said “have irreparably harmed two women.”
Subramanian himself noted that the punishment he imposed was significantly shorter than the range recommended by probation officers, 70 to 87 months.
He told Combs he was confident “you will make the most of your second chance.”
Combs tearfully told the court before the judge handed down the sentence that he was “truly sorry” for his actions.
The singer apologized to his family and his victims, saying his behavior was “disgusting, shameful and sick.”
Subramanian pointed out to Combs that his time in prison would not be for life. “You’re going to get through this,” the judge told him and his family.
