This April 15, a group of Democratic legislators from the House of Representatives will propose an “impeachment,” that is, an impeachment trial against the secretary of war from the United States, Pete Hegseth.
The reason is that the congressmen accuse the official, an ally of Donald Trump, of war crimes related to the conflict in Iranthat It started last February 28.
In addition, Hegseth is also accused of other crimes, as abuse of power or mismanagement in the Department of Defense.
According to the medium AxiosRepresentative Yassamin Ansari, the first Iranian-American Democrat, presented the resolution of the impeachment against the secretary.
Ansari’s resolution has the support of at least eight Democratic representatives, and in the document he accuses Hegseth of being a “complicit in the illegal and devastating war” in Iran.
Although the resolution has little chance of succeeding because it does not have the support of the Republicans, it demonstrates the Democratic strategy, which has put Hegseth in the spotlight, considered one of the weakest links in the Trump Administration.
Previously, Democrats had tried to push for impeachments against former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. and former Attorney General Pam Bondi, both fired by Trump in recent months.
The resolution is based on the fact that the war in Iran has not been authorized by Congress, as well as the violations of international humanitarian law and the attacks against civilians committed in the operation in the Middle East, with special attention to the bombing of a girls’ school in the Iranian city of Minab.
The reasons for activating the impeachment trial also include a reference to “Signalgate”, the national security scandal related to the use of the application by senior officials to coordinate a military attack against the Houthis in Yemen, and the case of Senator Mark Kelly, a who the Pentagon opened an investigation for defending the right of the military to refuse to carry out illegal orders.
