Sergio Chumil closed his participation in the O Gran Camiño 2026 this Saturday with an outstanding performance in the final stage between As Neves and Monte Trega, in the province of Pontevedra.
The Burgos Burpellet BH team rider held on with the favorites until the last two kilometers and finished in 18th place, 53 seconds behind the stage winner, the Italian Alessandro Pinarello. in what was one of his best individual performances of the competition. The overall champion of the 2026 edition was the British Adam Yates of the UAE Team Emirates.
The final stage was not easy for Chumil. In the first kilometers the Guatemalan tried twice to sneak into counterattack groups, but both times he was neutralized by the peloton before the escape could be consolidated. Despite this, the Chapin runner demonstrated his fighting spirit and arrived at the end of the day in excellent condition to finish among the best of the day in the epic high finish in front of the Atlantic.
Throughout the five stages, Chumil showed notable progression. He started in 80th place in the initial time trial, rose to 21st in the second stage by arriving with the winning group, was the best Latin American in the third stage finishing within the Top 20, came 24th in the fourth stage in one of the most demanding finishes of the test and closed with his best performance in the final stage by finishing 18th.
Chumil’s route in the O Gran Camiño 2026 confirms that the Guatemalan has the level to compete with the best in the international peloton. Throughout the five days that ran through Galicia from the Tower of Hercules to Mount Trega, the Burgos runner Burpellet BH remained competitive and was one of the Latin American leaders of the event along with the Uruguayan Eric Fagúndez.
The Burgos Burpellet BH team also had an outstanding collective participation in the test. Jesús Herrada finished ninth in the general classification, Sinuhé Fernández received the combativeness award in the final stage and the Spanish team placed five cyclists in the Top 30 of the race, with Chumil as one of the pillars of the team’s performance throughout the week.
Chumil’s participation in this edition of the O Gran Camiño adds another important chapter in its growth within European cycling. With this performance, the Guatemalan demonstrates that he can compete in high-level events with riders with greater international experience and continues to position himself as one of the most outstanding Chapin cyclists on the European circuit for the remainder of the season.
