Authorities dismantle five criminal structures linked to gangs

A total of 39 people captured and 13 inmates notified is the result of 164 raids carried out in 15 municipalities of the country, as part of operations against structures linked to extortion, the National Civil Police (PNC) reported this Wednesday, April 22.

The proceedings were carried out by the General Subdirectorate of Criminal Investigation, through the National Division against the Criminal Development of Gangs (Dipanda) and the Specialized Division in Criminal Investigation (DEIC), in coordination with prosecutors from the Public Ministry (MP).

The operations were carried out in Guatemala, Jutiapa, Escuintla, Chimaltenango, Chiquimula, Petén, Jalapa, San Marcos, Sacatepéquez, Alta Verapaz, Santa Rosa, Izabal and Retalhuleu.

According to official information, the actions allowed the dismantling of five criminal structures linked to Barrio 18 and the Mara Salvatrucha, related to extortion, acts against life and other crimes.

Among the crimes attributed to them are extortion, murder, extortionate obstruction of traffic and illicit association.

During the raids, the authorities seized more than 20 firearms of different calibers, 39 magazines, 205 ammunition, drugs, two telescopic sights, cell phones, cash, vests and caps with insignia similar to those of the PNC, as well as clothing with insignia similar to those of the MP, shackles and balaclavas.

Among the captures, the most notable is that of Jesús “N”, 29 years old, alias “Chus” or “Pelón”, detained in zone 6 of the capital. According to the authorities, he is accused of illicit association, murder and extortionate obstruction of traffic. In addition, he would be an alleged hitman for the Mara Salvatrucha and would be linked to armed attacks in that sector.

The authorities indicated that what was seized will serve as evidence to strengthen the ongoing investigation processes.
