Requisition in Renewal I exposes how detainees continue to evade “maximum security” controls

The searches inside the detention centers continue to expose how detainees evade the authorities to enter telecommunications devices, which they allegedly use to continue coordinating crimes.

The inspection by the security forces during the search carried out today in the so-called maximum security prison Renovación I, reflects the control that the inmates maintain against the prison authorities.

In addition to cell phones and chargers for these devices, a solar panel was also located, which allowed them to continue charging electronic devices in case their electricity service was blocked from prison.

Agents from the National Civil Police (PNC) and personnel from the Guatemalan Army participated in the actions. As a result, the confiscation of devices to maintain communication outside of prisons is reported.

Renewal I, according to the authorities, incorporates a stricter, high-security regime for highly dangerous inmates, gang members mainly linked to extortion.

Among what was seized were eight cell phones; 21 chargers; a solar panel and a router, without specifying in the report which telecommunications company it belongs to.

Likewise, various quantities of drugs were seized, including 104 bags and 60 cigars of marijuana; two bags of crack rocks; eight “fangs” of cocaine; 80 packs of cigarettes; and four knives.
