The new emissary of Donald Trump’s policy in Guatemala, Jorgan Andrews, charge d’affaires of the American embassy in the country, sent a message on social networks highlighting his priorities.
Andrews arrived in the country replacing John Barrett as chargé d’affaires of the US Embassy in Guatemala.
Andrews explained in a video posted on the X account of the United States Embassy in Guatemala that he is satisfied to return to Guatemala, since he remembered that he was in the country between 1998 and 2000.
“I am back to represent President Donald Trump and Secretary Marco Rubio, to continue advancing the America First policy, successfully led recently by the business manager, John Barrett,” he said.
His predecessor, Barret, was sent to Venezuela, a country with which the United States recently resumed its diplomatic relationship, after the arrest of former president Nicolás Maduro.
In his first days in Guatemala, Andrews has held meetings with President Bernardo Arévalo and the Minister of the Interior, Marco Antonio Villeda, as well as with Claudia Paredes, president of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ).
The priorities
In the message, the United States government highlighted through Andrews that it has three priorities, listing the first of them as stopping illegal immigration.
“Our policy is clear and consistent, and the bilateral relationship is solid and stable. Therefore, we will continue to work directly with the government of President Arévalo on our shared interests,” said the diplomat.
Among the three priorities, “stopping illegal immigration” stood out first, adding that “The US visa is a privilege, not a right. We must prioritize the security and interests of the American people.”
Secondly, he highlighted that the aim is to strengthen the commercial relationship between Guatemala and his country. “We will continue working with the Guatemalan private sector to create employment and economic prosperity.”
Thirdly, he highlighted that the authorities of the two nations are expected to jointly combat organized crime and drug trafficking, pointing out that the work between the two nations is vital.
“The security of Guatemala and the United States are deeply connected. In this year as we celebrate 250 years of the United States, I want to emphasize that the United States remains with Guatemala in this mission,” Andrews concluded.
