Currently the Zoo has 21 penguins, of which six are chicks, among them Nancy and Campito, who left their nest alone, the others are with their parents inside their nests, and so that everything follows its natural course, the park’s veterinarians are involved as little as possible.

The Humboldt penguins, Spheniscus humboldti, found in the zoo are a species classified as endangered due to the decline in their populations. They live mainly on the coasts of Peru and Chile and currently face threats such as habitat loss, overfishing, climate change and the presence of invasive species in their nesting areas. Due to this, it is classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Guatemalan Association of Natural History (AGHN), administrator of the Park since 1963 through Decree Law 39, is in charge of developing the Master Plan of the La Aurora Zoo, which has promoted the evolution of the infrastructure, enclosures, gardens and recreational areas of the Park. Within its mission, it also seeks the care, well-being and conservation of the species it houses.

“We named the two chicks Nancy and Campito thanks to the support of Qualipharm, who have been friends of the park for many years. This achievement is very important for us because we are constantly working on initiatives that support species that are in danger of extinction, and one of those is the Humboldt penguin,” commented Gabriela Galindo, Marketing Manager of the La Aurora Zoo.

In this context, the name Nancy has been chosen in tribute to Nancy Urbina, who left a special mark as Marketing Manager of Qualipharm. This recognition honors their more than 10 years of support for La Aurora Zoo and a valuable relationship that strengthened the institution’s conservation work.

Qualipharm, as a national pharmaceutical laboratory, reaffirms its commitment to education, species conservation and the generation of significant links with allies who share its vision of care and protection of wildlife.
