Arévalo begins interviews with candidates for attorney general in the middle of a key stage to define the head of the MP

President Bernardo Arévalo began this Tuesday, April 28, the round of interviews with candidates for attorney general and head of the Public Ministry (MP) at the National Palace of Culture, as part of the process of appointing the new head of that institution.

The first day began in the afternoon with the participation of lawyer Gabriel Estuardo García Luna, who arrived at 3:00 p.m. After spending one hour and 34 minutes in the meeting, he left without offering details about the content of the conversation with the president.

García Luna indicated that the interview focused on his work plan and that that was the only information he could share.

Subsequently, the candidate Beyla Adaly Estrada Barrientos was interviewed by the president. The meeting was scheduled for 5:00 p.m.; However, the applicant arrived at 4:45 p.m. at the National Palace of Culture, where she stated that she seeks to make herself known and present her work proposal.

Estrada Barrientos explained that she began her professional career in the Public Ministry, then she worked as a trial lawyer and is currently a magistrate of an Appeals Chamber in the criminal branch, with 12 years of experience in the Judicial Branch.

On social networks, the Government of Guatemala reported on the progress of the process and recalled that the legal deadline for submitting challenges has been met.

“Today the President @BArevalodeLeon began the interviews with the candidates for Attorney General of the Public Ministry. This step allows the process to advance while complying with the Nomination Commissions law that mandates waiting 72 hours for possible challenges,” says the official publication.

In a video released along with the message, Juan Gerardo Guerrero Garnica, Secretary General of the Presidency, stated: “Today, April 28, 2026, the President of the Republic of Guatemala has begun the interview period for the six candidates for Attorney General and Head of the Public Ministry. This is done in that window period that the law on nomination commissions gives us, derived from the fact that the 72-hour period has begun to run to be able to file challenges. Once that period of challenges, the President of the Republic will be fully empowered to issue the government agreement that appoints the next attorney general and head of the Public Ministry. As Guatemalans we have to be sure that, as the president has said repeatedly, on May 17 of this year we will have the next attorney general and head of the Public Ministry.”
