Comptroller’s Office shields digital platforms after alerts of hacks in public and academic institutions

The Comptroller General of Accounts (CGC) activated a computer protection protocol after alerts from cybersecurity companies about possible attacks against several State institutions.

According to these warnings, entities such as the General Directorate of Control of Weapons and Ammunition (Digecam), the National Registry of Persons (Renap), the University of San Carlos of Guatemala (Usac), the Ministry of Labor (Mintrab) and the Rafael Landívar University (URL) reported incidents related to unauthorized access to their systems.

Faced with this scenario, the Comptroller’s Office implemented the Protocol for Shielding and Prevention of Computer Assets, in order to safeguard institutional databases and avoid major breaches.

According to a statement released this Tuesday, April 28, as part of the measures, access between systems of different state entities was temporarily restricted, which could generate partial interruptions in electronic services.

The institution reported that these actions seek to guarantee operational continuity and protect sensitive information, which is why it urged users to carry out procedures in person while the situation normalizes.

In addition, he indicated that all official communication will be disclosed only through authorized institutional channels.
