Four committees are close to becoming political parties and competing in the 2027 general elections

The forecasts of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) indicate that for the 2027 general elections there will be 33 or 34 political parties that could seek the presidency of the country, and four committees stand out that are advancing by adding members to their bases.

In order for a committee to become a political party and compete in the following elections, it needs to have at least 28,083 members, in addition to meeting a series of assemblies.

But of the 24 registered committees reported as of April 30 by Political Organizations of the Citizen Registry, there are four that have added a good membership base and make them closer to being a political party.

Among these organizations, X Guate stands out; Revolution; Chapín, and Raíces. The first three have already passed the necessary threshold of members, while Raíces is close to reaching that number.

Canceled matches

To date, the TSE reports 25 registered political parties, leaving nine that were canceled after not reaching the minimum number of votes in the 2024 elections or for not obtaining a seat in Congress.

The only one that still appears, despite not reaching that minimum number of votes and not having representation in the Legislative Body, is the National Advancement Party (Pan), due to a recent appeal that has already been submitted to the TSE.

The political party Movimiento Semilla is not included in the list of nine cancelled, since this group won the presidential election and also placed 23 deputies for the tenth legislature.

Its cancellation is due to a court order due to the Semilla Corruption case, which indicates illegalities in the process of establishing a political party, due to the affiliation of deceased people for the creation of the organization.

The cancellation of Movimiento Semilla was issued by the Citizen Registry; It was confirmed when the last TSE rejected an appeal, and it was reaffirmed by the Constitutional Court (CC) after rejecting all pending appeals.

Some deputies loyal to Semilla, despite these rulings against, seek to revive the party through an amparo that was submitted to the CC, which was recently processed to the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) to hear the case.

New official offer

While some deputies from Movimiento Semilla seek their rescue, another faction of the ruling party chose to promote a new political party, giving way to the birth of Raíces.

This organization has among its founders the deputies Samuel Pérez, Andrea Reyes, Andrea Villagrán, Román Castellanos, Ronalth Ochaeta, Diego Toledo, Raúl Cua and other pro-government legislators.

On March 16, Raíces counted in the TSE data the number of 5,229 members, now as of April 30, the number of sympathizers increased considerably to 20,782 members.

This committee is about to reach the minimum number of members, which generated doubts among some representatives of political parties, doubting the real growth that the organization has had.

But Deyanira Herrera, in charge of Political Organizations, explained that this group has delivered a considerable number of documents every day, documents that are purged and subsequently accredited.

“There is no inclination for anyone, to affiliate or disaffiliate some, to pay attention to some and be more thorough with others, here all parties are treated equally,” Herrera remarked.

Given the suggestions of this growth in favor of Raíces, Herrera said that “There is not a day that they do not carry packages of 30, 40 or 50 affiliates per day,” thus explaining the growth of the organization.

Every time the data was shared on social networks, some of the founders of Raíces have been satisfied with the acceptance, among them Laura Marroquín, also one of the founding members.

Affiliate membership forms are evaluated by the Political Organizations team, which can discard affiliates if anomalies are detected in the documents.
