The Specialized Criminal Investigation Division (Deic) inaugurated this April 30 the office of the Cybercrime Case Investigation Group in the Chiquimula Investigation Delegation, at kilometer 171.5 of the route to Esquipulas.
During the formal ceremony, the head of the DEIC, Nelson Pichiya, indicated that this is the second headquarters of this unit at the national level.
In addition, the Police authorities recalled that the first office to pursue cybercrimes It was enabled in the department of Guatemala, as part of the strengthening of research capabilities.
The institution reported that the opening of this office in Chiquimula is part of the “Young Cyber Citizens Building Peace” project, promoted with the support of the United Nations, through the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with the aim of improving the institutional response to crimes committed through information technologies and digital platforms.
Likewise, they reported that next week a third headquarters will be inaugurated in Escuintla, which seeks to expand coverage and advance the regionalization of cybercrime investigation.
“The Cybercrime Case Investigation Group will allow for more technical, timely and specialized attention to cases related to digital scams, threats, extortion, harassment and identity theft, among other events linked to the use of technologies,” said the PNC.
Training with a gender perspective
The DEIC reported that on April 29, the closing of the workshop “Investigation techniques with a gender perspective for cases of sexual violence, femicide and violence against women” was held, developed with the support of the Project Strengthening the Rule of Law in Central America and the Caribbean (FEDACC) and the German cooperation GIZ.
In the opinion of the Police, the activity made it possible to strengthen the capacities of investigative personnel in the attention of sensitive crimes, by incorporating a gender approach and best investigative practices under the direction of the Public Ministry.
257 people participated in the training, 170 men and 87 women, with representation from delegations at the national level.
