Óscar Isaac, Guatemalan-American actorhighlighted the film The Lloronaby Guatemalan director Jairo Bustamante, as part of his selection of favorite films.
The artist visited the Criterion Closeta small cabinet with DVD and Blu-ray movies The Criterion Collectionlocated in New York, where filmmakers, actors and personalities choose their favorite films.
“I’m Oscar Isaac, I’m here in Criterion’s closet, let’s go shopping,” says the artist before beginning his selection.
In the video spread on social networks Isaac is seen taking the Guatemalan movie The Llorona and show it on the screen, while expressing his excitement to see it.
“The Llorona, Jairo Bustamante, a fellow chapín, Guatemalanamazing director. And I haven’t seen this version of the Criterion movie yet. Really excited to see this”says the artist.
For its part, Jairo Bustamante shared the video of Óscar Isaac and was pleased and grateful with the actor for having included his production on the list.
“What an honor! Thank you, Óscar Isaac, for choosing La Llorona from your list of Criterion Collection films. Thank you for making our history and our Guatemalan cinema visible in the world.”, wrote the Guatemalan director in his Facebook account.
The Guatemalan film La Llorona, the third directed by Jairo Bustamante, premiered in 2019 at the Venice Film Festival and, in 2020, arrived in Guatemala and spread to other regions, where received international awards as Best International Film at the Satellite Awards and Best Foreign Language Film by the North American Film Critics Associationamong others.
The production shows a story of resentment and revenge starring Alma, a young indigenous woman who arrives as a servant at the house of a former soldier.
“Alma is Enrique’s victim during the war in Guatemala. Thirty years later, he is accused of crimes against humanity, but later acquitted. Alma incarnates as La Llorona in the world of the living, ready to take justice by her own means.“, reads the synopsis.
