Between anniversaries and art, 2026 not only marks important dates for the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat), also reinforces a clear commitment: using numismatics as a way to tell the history of the country.

In the words of its president, Álvaro González Ricci, it is about going beyond the value of a currency and turning it into a piece with meaning: “The quetzal is one of the most stable currencies in the world, and these instruments allow us to generate confidence in the work of the bank.”

But this year, that strategy will have several key moments, and the first of them will be Civic Centerwhich commemorates 70 years of history.

A historic year

González Ricci remembers that, in addition to the 70 years of the Civic Centerthis 2026 will be marked by two other key milestones for the country: the 80 years of the Bank of Guatemalafounded on July 1, 1946and the 100 years of central banking in Guatemala.
