Social organizations have described the process as a case of “criminalization” promoted by the attorney general, Consuelo Porras Argueta, sanctioned by the United States and the European Union, and who will conclude her second term in the Public Ministry this month.
The case against González originated from a complaint by the deceased Supreme Court Justice Blanca Stalling, who accused her of abuse of authority for having investigated her in 2017 for influence peddling.
Although González acted under the protection of CICIG, the Prosecutor’s Office maintains that did not have the power to investigate judicial officials. On March 18, 2025, Judge Jimi Bremer decided to send her to trial.
The former CICIG president was arrested on August 28, 2023.
The trial was rescheduled due to the absence of the Public Ministry and pending legal appeals.
“We regret that the rooms are participants in this criminalization, the malicious delay and denial of justice. It is not possible that in months they cannot resolve an appeal,” González declared after the suspension of the hearing, pointing out that the judicial delay and the MP’s failure to comply postpone his legal situation for another year.
The defense lawyer, Joseline Jácome, explained that the judge set the new date for May 12, 2027. According to the jurist, the decision responds to the “unjustified non-appearance” of the Prosecutor’s Office and a unresolved appeal by the Second Chamber, which could annul a future sentence if it is not resolved before.
“We regret that the trial of lawyer Claudia González, former president of CICIG, delayed for another year“, writes Impunity Watch on social networks.
For her part, Margaret Satterthwaite, UN special rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, noted on May 4: “Their process has been marked by irregularities, including restrictions on the publicity of hearings and the numerous suspensions and delays“.

Since 2021, the Public Ministry has launched dozens of criminal proceedings against judges, prosecutors and lawyers who fought corruption, which has led to the exile of more than 50 of them.
González is one of the few justice operators who remains in the country, facing charges that already brought her remain in preventive detention for 82 days between August and November 2023.
