Arévalo awaits a resolution from the CC that allows repeating the electoral process for rector of the Usac

President Bernardo Arévalo, in an interview with Free pressreiterated the position of the Executive regarding the situation of the University of San Carlos (Usac) and assured that the Government maintains legal actions before the Constitutional Court (CC) to question the process that brought Walter Mazariegos to the rectorship for a second term.

According to Arévalo, the irregularities reported during the election of university authorities have affected not only the sectors directly involved, but also the country in general and access to public higher education.

The president indicated that the Executive expects a resolution from the CC that allows the electoral process to be repeated and authorities elected that have both legal support and legitimacy before the university community.

Regarding the statements of deputy Samuel Pérez on the matter, Arévalo avoided going deeper and pointed out that it is up to Pérez to explain his public positions on the conflict at the university.

On July 1, Walter Mazariegos took office for a second term as head of the Usac, amid demonstrations for and against.

The entrances to the central campus of Usac were the scene of riots, where groups denounced that Mazariegos took possession in the midst of a series of legal actions for alleged irregularities.

Through a video broadcast on his social networks, Mazariegos thanked the university authorities and the electoral bodies that voted for him and supported him to renew his tenure in office.
