Government appoints Emiliano Valdés Melendreras as new Vice Minister of Culture

This Wednesday, May 6, the Ministry of Culture and Sports (MCD) swore in the curator and researcher Emiliano Valdés Melendreras as the new Vice Minister of Culture, a position to which he arrives after a career linked to contemporary art, curatorship and cultural management, according to official sources.

According to a statement from the MCD, Valdés Melendreras has developed his professional career in the field of contemporary art, research and cultural management, with participation in curatorial projects and museum spaces inside and outside Guatemala.

He adds that his work has focused on curating, the production of knowledge and the development of projects linked to art, design, crafts and communities. It has also promoted initiatives related to indigenous practices, textiles and collaborative processes.

Among the positions he has held, the most notable is that of chief curator of the Museum of Modern Art of Medellín, an institution dedicated to contemporary art in Colombia. In addition, he has participated in exhibitions and artistic circulation platforms in different international settings.

His experience includes research, writing and cultural management, as well as the conceptual and curatorial development of exhibition projects.
