Investigation into payments of Q402 million takes the MP to the Ministry of Communications

The Public Ministry (MP) carried out procedures at the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing (CIV) to request files related to possible anomalies in the Social Solidarity Fund, it was reported this Wednesday, May 6.

A source from the MP reported that the actions derive from a complaint filed by the Comptroller General of Accounts, after an audit carried out for the period from January 1 to December 21, 2024.

According to the source, during the review it was established that payments were made for works from previous years for Q402 million, for which the authorities required labor files to determine possible responsibilities.

The CIV confirmed that MP personnel came to request documentation, although it indicated that these were not raids.

“They carried out a procedure by the MP to request documents and they were delivered to the CIV. They were scattered requests. We will not expand information so as not to hinder their investigation,” reported the Department of Social Communication of the CIV.

However, MP sources indicated that the proceedings were authorized as raids by a jurisdictional body.

In accordance with the judicial resolution, the Pluripersonal Court of First Instance Criminal and Environmental Crimes for Urgent Investigation Procedures of Guatemala authorized the MP to carry out raids, inspections, searches and seizure of evidence in two properties linked to an ongoing investigation.

The resolution was issued on May 5, 2026 during an urgent unilateral privileged hearing. Judge María Benilda Sandoval Valdez granted a period of two days to carry out the procedures requested by the Prosecutor’s Office.

In addition, the court granted the Prosecutor’s Office one month to return original files related to the case to the corresponding offices. The deadline will expire on June 5, 2026.

Subsequently, the judge refrained from continuing to hear the process and ordered the proceedings to be transferred to the Sixth Pluripersonal Court of First Instance for Criminal, Narcotics and Environmental Crimes of Guatemala so that the corresponding process can continue.
