This Saturday, May 9, Municipal sealed its ticket to the grand final of Clausura 2026 with a historic 5-0 win over Deportivo Mixco at the Manuel Felipe Carrera El Trébol Stadium, closing the series with a crushing 7-0 aggregate score that reflects the superiority of the Reds in both games. Mario Acevedo’s team will play its third consecutive final of the Guatemalan tournament in a performance that left no room for doubt from the first minutes of the match.
The match began with Mixco taking the initiative in the early stages, but Municipal grew progressively until it dominated the match completely. Jonathan Franco opened the scoring at minute 25 and Pedro Altán extended the lead at minute 28, taking advantage of an error at the start of the Chicharroneros, making the overall score 4-0 and ending any illusion of a comeback for Mixco before the break..
In the second half the story was even more compelling with César Calderón scoring the third at 50, César Archila putting the fourth at 78 and José Morales closing the score at 84 with a subtle shot for the final 5-0 that sealed the historic win.
Mixco’s night was especially complicated with several yellow cards and the expulsion of Nixsón Flores in the 57th minute that left the Chicharroneros with ten men in the final stretch of the game.
Fabricio Benítez’s team had arrived at El Trébol with the need to overcome the 0-2 deficit in the first leg with at least three goals difference, a mission that was ruled out from the moment Municipal scored its first two goals in the first half.
Municipal to the final for the third time
With the aggregate 7-0, Municipal advances to the grand final of Clausura 2026 where it will await the winner of the other semifinal between Xelajú MC and Comunicaciones that will be played this Sunday at 7:00 PM at the Mario Camposeco Stadium in Quetzaltenango. The Reds reach the final as the most consistent team of the season with 86 points on the accumulated table and with the solidity they have shown throughout the entire league.
Municipal’s qualification to its third consecutive final confirms the dominance of the capital club in Guatemalan soccer in recent years. In this final, the Reds will seek to win the 33rd title in their history against a rival that has yet to be defined between Xelajú MC and Comunicaciones, in what promises to be a great final of the Clausura 2026 that Guatemalan soccer already has marked on the calendar.
