President Bernardo Arévalo stated during the press conference held this Monday, May 11 at the National Palace of Culture who does not expect any kind of “surprise” from the Constitutional Court (CC) that could prevent the inauguration of the new attorney general and head of the Public Ministry, Gabriel García Luna, appointed the previous week to replace Consuelo Porras.
The president stated that this week is very important “since it is the last week that Consuelo Porras will be at the head of the MP.”
“This is the last week of a complex stage of deterioration, manipulation and perversion of justice in our country and after this week we open a new chapter for a future of a prosecutor’s office placed at the service of the Republic and at the service of the population,” said the president.
Arévalo also assured that the decision to appoint Gabriel García Luna as the new attorney general was due to the fact that he brings together several aspects, such as capacity, honesty and integrity, which are appropriate for the performance of the position at the head of the Public Ministry.
“The decision came because they converge on the criterion of capacity to exercise the position from a legal point of view, with the integrity and honesty that are necessary to be able to carry out the rescue of this institution that is so important for the country’s justice,” he stated.
He also highlighted again that The role of the attorney general must be independent and not at the service of any president or political or private interests.
“The attorney general does not arrive to serve a specific president, he does not arrive to serve any political interest, but rather to serve the population and objective and independent justice,” he assured.
Regarding pending appeals in the CC
On Tuesday, May 12, the Constitutional Court (CC) will be hearing various protections related to the election process of the attorney general, which have been filed against the Nomination Commission, the president and the list of candidates that was prepared by the qualifying body.
Regarding the resolution of these protections, the president clarified that he does not expect any “surprise” to occur from the constitutional court that could alter the appointment or prevent the new attorney general from taking office on May 17.
“Regarding the appeals for protection that are before the Constitutional Court, there are already several appeals for protection that were previously dismissed, we do not see why these will not suffer the same fate because they have the same type of basis, so we do not expect any surprises around this situation,” he pointed out.
