Two forest fires got out of control this Thursday, May 14, on the route to the Atlantic and on the highway to San Juan Sacatepéquez, causing damage to a restaurant, road closures and complications in vehicular traffic, reported the Volunteer Firefighters and the Municipal Transit Police (PMT) of Mixco.
The PMT of Mixco reported that a forest fire affects kilometer 21 of the highway towards San Juan Sacatepéquez, where Volunteer Firefighters are working to control the flames.
Due to the large columns of smoke and the risk for motorists, the authorities closed the vehicular passage in the sector, which affects circulation in Mixco Norte and on the San Juan road.
Several companies of Volunteer Firefighters were deployed to the scene to combat the fire, which spreads across a large wooded area.
On the route to the Atlantic, another forest fire is recorded between kilometers 22 and 23, in a ravine located on the side of the lane that leads to the capital.
Víctor Gómez, spokesperson for the Volunteer Firefighters, indicated that multiple calls for help came to emergency number 122 alerting about several fire outbreaks at kilometers 22, 22.5 and 23 of that route.
He added that elements of the 85th company initially went to the scene and later requested support from other stations due to the magnitude of the fire.
According to Gómez, rescuers work with fire trucks and supply units to prevent the fire from continuing to spread in the undergrowth.
The spokesperson confirmed that a restaurant was consumed by flames as collateral damage from the forest fire.
“Two teams of firefighters are working in the restaurant area to put out the remains of the fire,” Gómez explained.
He added that first responders managed to remove two gas cylinders from the kitchen area to prevent a major emergency.
The Volunteer Firefighters continue the control and liquidation work in both affected sectors.
