This Friday, May 15, Attorney General Consuelo Porras gave her work report speech at the head of the Public Ministry (MP), a few hours after handing over the position to the elected Attorney General Gabriel García Luna.
Porras gave her speech in front of the fiscal staff and other officials, and highlighted her eight years of management, since former president Alejandro Giammattei elected her for a second term, which will end this weekend.
According to her, during the eight years of her administration they served the Guatemalan citizens with “dignity, with responsibility, commitment and professionalism, but above all honestly.”
The prosecutor indicated that this report she presented “does not constitute only a legal mandate”, as it has become an “ethical and moral duty”, because, according to her, they reported “with transparency, responsibility and accountability on the actions carried out.”
His speech was based on highlighting the MP’s coverage and presenting “the testimony of eight years of service to the country, constant work, firm decisions and institutional transformation.”
To whom will the position be handed over?
Consuelo Porras will hand over the position to Gabriel García Luna, who was chosen by President Bernardo Arévalo after the election of the list presented by the Nominating Commission.
The newly appointed attorney general presented his work plan to the postulator on April 6, focused on independence, modernization and attention to victims. García Luna was sworn in this Friday by President Arévalo.
Porras has been sanctioned
On April 2, 2025, the United Kingdom reported that it sanctioned seven Guatemalans, including Consuelo Porras, for alleged acts of corruption.
He reported on that occasion that he sanctioned “seven corrupt actors whose actions have undermined democracy and the rule of law in Guatemala.”
