New riots in Santa Teresa prison leave inmates and children affected by tear gas

The security forces intervened again this Thursday, May 14, in the Santa Teresa Preventive Detention Center for Women, in zone 18 of the capital, after incidents were reported hours after the authorities announced the recovery of control of the prison.

The Volunteer Firefighters reported that they were mobilized to the prison center after receiving reports of disturbance of order inside.

“Elements of Volunteer Firefighters are already ready at the Santa Teresa Preventive Detention Center for Women, in zone 18. A riot is reported inside,” the rescuers indicated.

“Emergency Medical Technicians from Volunteer Firefighters are providing assistance to prisoners and their minor children due to tear gas poisoning, after a riot at the Santa Teresa preventive detention center for women, in zone 18,” the first responders added.

The rescue forces added that they treated seven inmates and four children with symptoms of tear gas poisoning, which suggests that security agents used this resource during the actions to regain control of the prison.

In videos spread on social networks, smoke is seen coming out of one of the areas of the prison center.

The authorities of the Penitentiary System have not commented on the new incidents or the causes of the emergency.

Last Wednesday, the Volunteer Firefighters reported disturbance of order at the Santa Teresa Preventive Detention Center for Women. On that occasion, the Municipal Firefighters also reported women with symptoms of tear gas poisoning.
