The president of the European Council, Antonio Costa, will hold a meeting with President Bernardo Arévalo this Wednesday, May 20, during the visit that the representative of the European Union will make to Guatemala and Mexico this week.

This meeting will take place at the National Palace of Culture, where they will talk about various issues aimed mainly at carrying out development and cooperation projects. All this within the framework of the rescue of justice institutions in Guatemala, stated President Arévalo.

“He is on an official visit to the country, within the framework of an agenda that aims to deepen and strengthen relations between Guatemala and the European Union. This is happening at a key moment in our country, at a time when the joint agenda that we have with the European Union of building democratic institutions and rescuing justice institutions adds to the development projects and the search for cooperation to be able to channel foreign investment to our country,” said the president.

Through a statement, The European Council indicated that Antonio Costa’s visit to Guatemala and Mexico has the objective of strengthening cooperation ties with Latin America, in the context of the currently growing geopolitical tension.

“The visits reflect the EU’s objective, as well as President Costa’s political priority, of building stronger relationships around the world in a changing international environment,” the statement said.

He also points out that during the visit that the president of the European Council will make to Guatemala “will reaffirm the EU’s long-standing commitment to democracy and human rights in Guatemala, as well as its continued involvement as a reliable trading partner and trusted cooperation partner.”

It is planned that the meeting between Arévalo and Costa takes place at 10 a.m.
