This May 21, the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, described the former president of Cuba, Raúl Castro, recently indicted by US authorities for murder, as “a fugitive from justice.”

At a press conference in Miami, prior to a trip to Sweden and India, Rubio did not provide details about how the authorities would act to bring Castro to the United States.

“I’m not going to talk about how we would get it here. Why would I tell the media what our plans are on this? In short, at this point he has become a fugitive from American justice and, if there is any announcement about it, We will inform you later, not before,” Rubio stated.

He added that the evidence presented against the former Cuban president “is clear because he has openly admitted and presumes that he shot down civilians and that he also gave the order to shoot down planes”.

On May 20, Raúl Castro was accused by the United States for the death of four airmen of the organization Brothers to the Rescue in 1996, when he was Minister of Defense.

At the center of the investigation is a recording from June of that year with Cuban journalists, in which Castro He would have confessed that he ordered the two planes to be shot down.

The case has generated speculation about whether the Donald Trump Administration is preparing Castro’s capture, as happened last January in Venezuela with Nicolás Maduro, who faces a trial for drug trafficking in the United States.

The accusation against Castro represents one more step in the pressure that the United States exerts on the island, after imposing a energy blockade and after Trump’s threats to “take control” of the Caribbean country.
