Guatemalan cyclist Sergio Chumil will return to international competition this week when he competes in the Gran Premio Beiras e Serra da Estrela in Portugal. Chumil will defend the colors of Burgos Burpellet BH in a three-stage test that will be held from May 22 to 24.

The race will start with a demanding first stage of 193 kilometers between Mêda and Fornos de Algodres, a route that will test the peloton from the beginning. On Saturday the second day will be held with 175 kilometers between Sabugal and Fundão, where the climbs could make important differences in the general classification.

The decisive stage will arrive on Sunday with a route of 186 kilometers and the ascent to Torre, one of the most emblematic ports in Portugal. This promotion has a special meaning for Chumil, who managed to achieve it during the 2024 Vuelta a Portugal in one of the most outstanding performances of his career.

Burgos Burpellet BH will face the competition with a young and competitive lineup headed by Eric Fagúndez, Carlos García Pierna and Sergio Chumil. The team will be led by Jesús Ezquerra and will seek prominence in the Portuguese mountains also supported by Adrián Fajardo, Sinuhé Fernández, Hugo de la Calle and Jambaljamts Sainbayar.

Chumil in a good moment

Sergio Chumil’s participation in the GP Beiras e Serra da Estrela comes at one of the best moments of his career in Europe. The Guatemalan cyclist has just finished in eleventh position in the general classification of the Vuelta a Asturias 2026, consolidating his growth within the international peloton.

In addition, the knowledge he has about the promotion to Torre could become a key factor during Sunday’s decisive stage. Chumil already conquered that port in the 2024 Tour of Portugal and will now seek to stand out again in one of the most emblematic mountains of Portuguese cycling.
