We are very close, very close and we get along very well, something that has not happened before in Caifanes. There have been many fights at different times, especially when we were younger. Then the egos also got out of control. Now I think we appreciate what everyone brings to the table. I think we have matured in that sense and We know that Caifanes are all of us who are there, including the new elements,” he highlighted in the publication.

in history

An article in Prensa Libre explains that in 1984, Alejandro Marcovich’s brother, Carlos, asked him to organize a party to raise funds to finance his thesis. Alejandro decided to call some musicians for the activity. This is how the group Las Insólitas Imagens de Aurora was born, made up of Saúl Hernández on bass and vocals—who was then active in the band Frac—, Alfonso André on drums and backing vocals—who was recommended by Carlos—and Alejandro himself on guitar and vocals.

Later, in January 1987, after the dissolution of Las Insólitas, Caifanes was officially formed with the following members: Saúl Hernández —voice and guitar—, Sabo Romo —bass—, Diego Herrera —keyboards and saxophone— and Juan Carlos Novelo —drums. Their first presentation was on April 11, 1987 in Rockotitlán. Novelo left the band after the second concert and was permanently replaced by Alfonso André.

Despite the growing wave of followers of the quartet, due to economic reasons they only managed to record a demo with four songs: Kill me because I’m dying, Nothing, It will be because of that and dawn.

Caifanes’ real opportunity came when the Ariola label called them to open Miguel Mateos’ concert in Mexico City, in October 1987. Caifanes decided to sign with RCA Ariola and their first self-titled album, also known as Volume Iwent on sale in August 1988; the simple Kill me because I’m dying It was his first success.

In December they recorded the song The black Tomasa. The work included three versions of the cover by Cuban Guillermo Rodríguez Fiffe, The black Tomasaand the theme I lost my deer eye.

In 1989, after having filled the National Auditorium for two consecutive days—the first Mexican rock band to do so—the group prepared songs for their second material.

In September of that year, guitarist Alejandro Marcovich joined the group. Already a solid quintet, the band traveled to New York to record their second work: Volume IIknown as The little devilof which they highlighted: behind you, Before they forget us, The hidden gods and The cell that explodes.

In 1992 it was published The silenceconsidered one of the best albums of Mexican rock and Latin rock, which includes much of Caifanes’ classic repertoire, such as: Don’t let…, Ash Wednesday, Clouds, We go together and Stone.

Farewell and reconciliation

In 1993, when the group seemed firm, Sabo Romo said goodbye to the group and, shortly after, Diego Herrera. Caifanes was reduced to a trio, which gave shape to the last album, The nerve of the volcano. From this they emerge Outside, Fear and Yesterday a bird told me.

The band had impressive international growth; However, the differences between Saúl Hernández and Alejandro Marcovich also increased and the group dissolved. Caifanes offered his last concert on August 18, 1995 in the city of San Luis Potosí and formally said goodbye to his fans.

After the band dissolved, Saúl Hernández formed Jaguares and invited Alfonso André to participate. Diego Herrera served as artistic director of BMG Ariola and in 2006 he joined Jaguares. Sabo Romo released his solo album with his own label and also worked on the albums Under the blue of your mystery and Chronicles of a labyrinthfrom Jaguars. Alejandro Marcovich, meanwhile, dedicated himself to producing and arranging the music of different artists, and recorded the EP Nocturnal alone.

On December 14, 2010, the reunion of the quintet for the Vive Latino 2011 festival was announced, after Hernández and Marcovich said that they smoothed over differences. At that time the idea of a tour was ruled out. After a concert in California, they realized that they could continue working together and began the tour.
