Spanish businessman Enrique Riquelme Vives, 37, led a renewable energy project in Guatemala and is one of the two candidates aspiring to preside over Real Madrid in the June 7, 2026 elections.
His opponent is the current president of the club, Florentino Pérez. In recent weeks, both have carried out an intense campaign marked by proposals, accusations and disputes to win the support of the partners.
In Guatemala, Real Madrid is one of the teams with the largest number of followers, along with FC Barcelona. For this reason, there is interest in the election that will define who will lead one of the most important institutions in world football.
Riquelme is founder and CEO of Cox Energya company dedicated to the development and promotion of energy projects in America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
In your profile LinkedIn thus summarizes its relationship with Guatemala: “In 2012 I led the development of a 56 MW photovoltaic plant in Guatemala, Rainbow 50which at the time was the most important in Latin America.”
The Cox Energy official website details the scope of the project: “In 2012 he led the bidding phase and development of the largest photovoltaic project carried out up to that point in Latin America, Rainbow 50. Located in Guatemala, the installed capacity of the aforementioned plant reached 55.6 MW, with an investment of US$100 million.”
A historical link with Guatemala
This is not the first time that Real Madrid appears linked to Guatemalan sports history. In 1961, the Spanish club visited the country and played a match friendly against Communications.
Since then, the institution has not returned to Guatemala as a team, although some of its players have done so in individual activities.
The most special bond remains that of Federico Revolto. Born in 1882 in Cuyotenango, Suchitepéquez, he joined the then Madrid Football Club in 1902, when he was 19 years old.
He became captain of the team and won four consecutive Copa del Rey between 1905 and 1908. In addition, he scored one of the goals in the 1908 final. He remains the only Guatemalan to have worn the Real Madrid shirt.
Currently, this relationship is maintained through an official club supporter in Guatemala and various commercial alliances in the country.
The race for the presidency
In the middle of the electoral campaign, Riquelme has mentioned the possible incorporation of footballers likeo Erling Haaland and Rodri Hernández if elected.
However, on June 4, Manchester City and the Norwegian striker’s entourage they publicly denied any agreement related to an eventual transfer.
On June 7, the members of Real Madrid will decide who will lead the club for the next few years.
