Deputy Cristian Álvarez went this Friday to the administrative offices of the Guatemalan Migration Institute (IGM) to carry out an inspection visit that was broadcast live through social networks. However, while he was at the entrance to the building explaining that there were no personnel working, several gunshots were heard and were recorded in the transmission.
The parliamentarian was talking about the visit when the incident occurred. The video shows that, while waiting in front of one of the doors, he began to explain that they were on vacation there.
“They have union day…”, Álvarez said when the first detonations were heard. The people accompanying him told him that the shots came from another nearby sector.
Seconds later a new explosion was heard, so the deputy asked the security guard to open access to the building.
After what happened, the Guatemalan Migration Institute issued a statement in which it explained that administrative work was suspended due to a holiday established in the Collective Agreement on Working Conditions, on the occasion of the anniversary of one of the institution’s union organizations.
The entity indicated that, due to the absence of authorities and administrative staff, it was not possible to attend the deputy’s inspection visit, although it assured that he will be received next Monday June 8.
Likewise, Migration clarified that during the live broadcast A criminal act was recorded in the vicinity of the sector, situation that he described as foreign to the institution. However, he indicated that he will collaborate with any investigation that may arise from the incident.
After the incident, Deputy Álvarez indicated that, until now, he does not have enough information to determine exactly what happened. However, he stated that the shots were recorded a few meters from the place where they were and that one of the projectiles hit the vehicle he uses.
Álvarez also referred to the insecurity situation in the country. “Thousands of Guatemalans live in fear every day due to insecurity, and today I had to live one of these moments. That reality cannot be normal or indifferent to the authorities,” he said.
