Vice Consul of Guatemala in Los Angeles recovers her freedom after the arrest warrant for the death of her husband was annulled

Judge Ulises Ixcot Xicará, of the High Risk Court of Quetzaltenango, in a hearing held on Thursday, June 4, decided to refrain from hearing the case against Gladis Jeanette Castro García, vice consul of Guatemala in Los Angeles, who was captured on May 23 for her alleged responsibility in the death of her husband, of Jordanian origin, which occurred in 2017.

The judge also annulled the arrest warrant issued in January 2026 within the process, so Castro García regained his freedom.

After the judicial resolution, the Public Ministry reported that it has already requested a new arrest warrant, which is being processed.

According to information from the National Civil Police, the vice consul arrived in the country on a deportee flight from the United States. The arrest warrant was issued for the crimes of patricide and obstruction of criminal proceedings.

The fact

On September 9, 2017, in a home located in the Victoria canton, Malacatán, San Marcos, a domestic accident was reported in which Mohammad Hashem Suleiman, of Jordanian origin, lost his life.

He was found dead in his home. Initially it was reported that he had slipped in the garden and that, as a result of the blow suffered, he had lost his life, as reported on that occasion.

A private doctor would have arrived at the scene, who would have certified the death of the Jordanian citizen. The alleged diligence was not carried out by the corresponding authorities. Investigators from the Public Ministry were not allowed to enter the home to carry out the respective procedures, according to the investigation.

Suleiman’s relatives, during the wake, noticed a wound presumably caused by a bullet, so they reported the incident. A forensic examination would have corroborated this circumstance, so the corresponding investigation began.
