Videos shared on social networks show the force with which the sea hit the coast of Iztapa, Escuintla, where several rest houses were destroyed or severely damaged by the strong waves recorded in recent days, from June 8 to June 10.
The images, some captured with drones by the local media Being from Iztapa 2, damage is evident along the public beach of Atitancitoa coastal village located in that region, one of the sectors most affected by the phenomenon known as swell.
According to local reports and authorities, at least eight chalets were destroyed, while another 16 properties remain at risk due to the constant onslaught of the waves.
“It started on Monday afternoon and yesterday the strong waves did not stop. Several properties began to be swept away,” said Ángel, a resident of the area.
Given the advance of the sea, owners and caretakers have begun to remove furniture and belongings to avoid further losses. The concern also reaches dozens of families who depend financially on these vacation homes.
“Many people are going to be unemployed because they took care of these chalets and survived from that work”added the resident.

Conred confirms damage to homes
The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) reported that it carried out an evaluation at the public beach of Atitancito and at least 15 homes with structural damage were identified.
In addition, the institutions of the Conred System coordinated response actions and recommended to the population stay away from the sea shore due to the existing risk.
The entity also reported that it coordinated with the electricity distribution company for Damage observed on poles and power lines close to the affected area.

One of the videos captured shows the magnitude of the damage to one of the affected homes. The property appears practically destroyed, with much of its structure collapsed and the foundations exposed after the constant pounding of the waves.
The images show how the sea advanced to where the construction was located, leaving only remains of walls and sections of the building on the beach.

Eight homes were destroyed
Erick Aguilar, in charge of the Risk Management Office of the Municipality of Iztapa, indicated that the effects are not limited to Atitancito, but also reach other coastal sectors.
“Between Atitancito, Conacaste and El Guayabo we have approximately 18 homes affected. Of these, eight vacation homes are already completely destroyed,” he explained.
The official pointed out that municipal and Conred personnel carried out preventive tours to warn owners and caretakers about the risk of staying in properties with structural damage.

“We notified all people to evacuate because the buildings looked quite damaged in their structure. The priority was to prevent there being any victims,” he added.
As part of these actions, a family was preventively evacuated from one of the affected chalets. The authorities keep the municipal hall enabled to attend to any need derived from the emergency.

The authorities continue to monitor maritime conditions and recommend that the population avoid approaching areas where waves continue to impact the coastline.
